Umar (ra) gathered the companions and consulted them regarding the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
Some suggested the birth of Muhammed (saw) – exact date unknown
Some suggested the date of the Nabuwwat of Muhammed (saw) – exact date unknown
Then the Hijra was suggested and all agreed – The planning of Hijra took place in Muharram.
Muharram is one of the sacred months

Four out of twelve months are scared. Thul Qidah, Thul Hijjah, Muharram, Rajab
The best of Fasting after the month of Ramadaan is fasting during Muharram. Remind everyone you know, those who fast will also bring you reward.
The 10th of Muharram is known as Ashura because the Jews would fast on that day as the day when Musa (as) was emancipated from Firawn.
Fasting on the 10th Muharram will expiate the minor sins of the past year. Do NOT forget to fast on this Day.
Major sins require proper tawbah and to promise to cease the committing of this sin.
The Prophet (saw) would fast on the 10th of Muharram even during Jahilliyah – it was from the remnants of the teachings of Ibrahim (as) way before Hussain (ra) martyrdom. The fasting on the 10th of Muharram is not related.
Hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas states that the Prophet Muhammed (saw) said if he lived until next year he would fast on the 9th as well as the 10th to be different from Ahl Kitaab.
